Sheffield - Carousel Chocolaterie

Happy Easter!

Apparently every child in the UK receives on average 8.8 Easter eggs.  I think most kids would prefer quality rather than quantity. If you've not already got one, Carousel Chocolaterie in Sheffield would be a good place to go:
It's a relatively new business, and is currently ranked on Trip Advisor as the second best place in Sheffield to go shopping (only the giant Meadowhall Shopping centre does better)!

They sell good quality chocolates, mainly from Belgium.
So whether you fancy a dark coffee mousse, a milk egg liqueur with pistachio or a white coconut liqueur truffle, they'll have it here!
For lovers of local food, they also have a hand made in Sheffield range.

We played Russian roulette with our selection
and had a dark chilli and lime truffle in our box!

They've got lots of truffles to choose from:
and these pretty Easter figures:
They also have good quality, sugar-free chocolates.

So I'll stop rabbiting on about how good this shop is:
and just say it's eggcellent!

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust

It's always impressed me how there's some beautiful countryside right on the edge of the city of Sheffield. Whirlow Hall Farm is just 4 miles from the centre of Sheffield, but it's in another world!

Whirlow Hall Farm is an Educational Trust, which was set up for inner-city children to come and experience the countryside - and have a better understanding of where their food comes from

So you can meet Bracken the pony:
and, if you prefer something smaller, there's Frankie the Shetland pony:
These lambs were enjoying something to eat:
but these very young lambs were having a rest under a heat lamp:
Just above that barn is their farm shop:
The shop sells their own produce, and other carefully selected items, mainly from  local producers.
The wall at the back explains they measure food miles in metres:
with fresh eggs from just around the corner, and their own free-range eggs, high-welfare pork, lamb and beef and award winning bacon and sausage.
There's an interesting selection of foods including their own green tomato chutney:
and pickles from Just Preserves, which is just 3 miles away.

They sell organic bread from (the soon to be featured in this blog) Cat Lane Bakery:
Beer lovers are well catered for.  There's Punk IPA from BrewDog:
and more local beers come from Kelham Island Brewery (just 5 miles away):
and Farmers' Ales from Bradfield Brewery - a family run brewery based on a working farm in the Peak District.

At weekends there's guided tours of the farm, and the Cruck Barn Café serves their own freshly prepared produce:
All the proceeds are ploughed back into the trust, so you can feel really good about what you're eating here!

Sheffield - Seven Hills Bakery

Seven Hills Bakery started when Matina Mitchell, Laura Bullock and John Travers met at a bread making course at the School of Artisan Food, and then decided to start a bakery near Hunters Bar in Sheffield. Word has evidently got out about how good this bakery is, so I had to wait for the queue outside to go:
There's an amazing choice of bread, including batons, ciabatta, fougasse, roast potato and rosemary, soda bread, sunflower seed and wheat germ & honey:
Sour doughs include apricot and hazelnut, beetroot, fig & walnut, linseed, and raisin & fennel.
We enjoyed this red onion focaccia:
At the back of the shop there's a small café:
where you can have soup, sandwiches, toast, pizza and Monmouth coffee or leaf tea.
There's traditional cakes, like this Victoria sponge:
and lots of interesting items, like these vanilla bean buns:
which don't look anything special, but tasted really nice.  We would especially recommend this orange semolina cake:
which was wonderfully moist and tasty.

If you like brioche, you'll also be well catered for.  There's sour cherry and marzipan, or lemon and cardamom brioche buns:
and cinnamon brioche swirls:
There's attention to detail here, so the brownies are made with Valrhona dark chocolate.
This lemon almond and poppy seed loaf was wonderfully moist and very lemony (it also smelt lovely). It's also gluten free.

Brighouse - Ryecorn Wholefoods Limited

Whenever anyone talks about Brighouse, I instantly think of the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, which always brings a smile to my face.

Now there's another reason why I smile when I think of Brighouse - Ryecorn Wholefoods:
It's a health food shop packed with all sorts of interesting food and health supplements and body care products. There's Ivy House organic cheese from Southowram, and more local dairy produce from Longley Farm in Holmfirth.

Their bread comes from LoveBread - a community supported bakery, which aims to bring the many benefits of baking real bread to Brighouse and Calderdale communities.  It's real bread made with organic flour, water, yeast and salt and no artificial flavourings or preservatives, so they're members of the Real Bread Campaign.
We tried their chilli, cheese & onion white bread and a seeded malted brown (made with a long fermentation).  Fresh bread is delivered to the shop every day (except Wednesday).

The shop also sells organic free range eggs, local honey and some attractive organic fruit and vegetables, including unwaxed lemons:
There's also an interesting selection of teas, and chocolates from Guppy's chocolates in York

South Cave - Drewton's Farm Shop

Drewton's Farm Shop opened in October 2010, and has already become the place to buy and enjoy good local food and drink in this part of South Yorkshire.
They sell a wide range of foods, and support over 250 local farmers and growers and producers/suppliers of some of the best food and drink in Yorkshire. There's a strong emphasis on local, as you can see from this map:
- they even managed to find a real cider maker, Moorlands Farm Cyder, who's less than 4 miles away.

They've already won numerous awards, including highly commended in the Visit England  Taste of England Awards this year.

They've got a good butchery display:
and their sausage rolls where named as the best in the country at this year's BPEX food service awards.
Their steak pies, which are packed full of meat, have also done very well in both local and national awards:
try one to find out why!

There's a very pleasant café, where you can dine indoors or (when the weather's nice) outdoors.  There's a wide ranging menu, including their award winning Yorkshire breakfast (available all day), light snacks and main meals. Much of the ingredients come from either the Drewton Estate, or the local suppliers that supply the shop.

They stage popular Come Dine With Me events, where you can dine with some of the producers whose goods are on sale in the farm shop and find out more about their produce. They did one on gluten free diets, as they stock a range of gluten free foods.

Vouchers for their Afternoon Tea:
are, not surprisingly, proving popular for Christmas presents.

They've even made their own Winter Wonderland:
I found the staff friendly and helpful. I'm sure that, in future, this great shop will get even better!

East Riding Country Pork

I had a very pleasant holiday at Spurn Point earlier this year (admiring baby avocets here and reading Larkin).  The owner of the guest house where we stayed used to be a pig farmer, and I asked if he could recommend any good local food shops.  He suggested we visit East Riding Country Pork:
In this part of Yorkshire there's a lot of cereals grown.  East Riding Country Pork grow their own grain, which is then fed to their pigs (who then help to fertilise the cereals).  The pigs go to a local abattoir, just 3 miles away (which I believe help animal welfare and cuts out food miles).

The shop sells their own dry cured bacon, and over 15 different varieties of sausage.  They also sell Belgian blue beef (which is hung for a minimum of 28 days), lamb and poultry, all from local farms.  They also sell game (when in season).
East Riding Country Pork were Highly Commended in the Best Fresh Local Product category at East Yorkshire Local Food Network’s Awards Ceremony this year.

The shop also sells Gold from the Wold rapeseed oil, Boothams cakes (from Whitby), Mr Moos ice-cream from Skipsea and a Farmer's Daughter cards.

Pontefract - Farmer Copleys

Farmer Copleys is nearly 10 years old, and a fantastic place to buy great Yorkshire food.  It's a one-stop shop, with a bakery, butchers, fruit and vegetables, and much more besides.
It's got a particularly good butchers department (10.5 metres long) with attractive displays, like these Yorkshire cushions:
When I called, they had some nice ribs of beef (21 day matured and perfect with Yorkshire pudding):
but I went for the Flat Ribs, which are really cheap, and taste beautiful when cooked slowly.

They do a nice line in pies, we also had had a very good steak pie:
The pork, apple and stuffing, and free range farmers' pies also looked good:
They grow their own fruit and vegetables - you can follow the crops live on their Facebook page.
What they can't grow on the farm, they try and source locally.  The Pontefract banana harvest is usually disappointing, so the bananas come by slow boat rather than by air, to reduce the carbon footprint.

Farmer Copleys is just outside Pontefract.  This town was the first place where liquorice mixed with sugar to make liquorice sweets as we know them today. The town even has a Liquorice Festival held in July.  At Farmer Copleys you can buy a variety of liquorice products.  There's liquorice  root:
(sticks which I used to chew on when I was a child) and Pontefract Cakes:
Did you know that when the first secret ballot in the UK was held (in Pontefract), the ballot box used was sealed using a Pontefract cake stamp?

There was also liquorice ice-cream, and liquorice stout for sale:
which tasted better than I was expecting!

If you can't wait till you get home to have something to eat, there's the Moo Café:
where special diets (eg. coeliacs) are also catered for.

Outside there's Melanie's Florist:
and on Fridays and Saturday's Glenn from Whitby sells fresh fish and seafood.

There's different events throughout the year (they've just had a pumpkin Festival)  In the summer/autum there's a Maize Maze, and other activities for the kids.
