Nantwich - Teresa's Icecream Parlour

I love Nantwich, and I've just found another reason for you to love it too. In this lovely historic town there's already 100 businesses selling food and drink, and now there's another!

Yesterday a tricycle in the square was giving out free samples of icecream:

and on the Oatmarket, next door to the Talbot, Teresa's Icecream Parlour has now opened.

There's coffee and cakes

but the main thing here is icecream. It's made on the premises:

and there's 22 flavours to choose from.

In this rotating display:

there's Banoffee, Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, Cream Egg, Ferrero Rocher, Honeycomb, Mint Choc Chip, Pecan Caramel, Raspberry Vanilla, Snickers, Strawberry, and Vanilla.

There's more flavours here:

including Pistachio, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie, Lemon, Dairy Free Strawberry, Smartie Pants, After Eight Mint, Caramel Cream Egg, Kibana Sorbet (kiwi and banana) and Dairy Free Vanilla.

It's a little piece of Italy in Cheshire!

Manchester - Ginger’s Comfort Emporium

A sign at Ginger's Comfort Emporium says it's all about the ice cream - and that's exactly right!

Claire Kelsey has won best dessert in the British Street Food Awards three years in a row, and until recently was selling them from this lovely vintage style van:

Sorry about the poor photo (it was taken at this year's Nantwich Food Festival), it was just beginning to rain and it's hard to take a good photo when one hand is holding a 'Chorlton crack’ (peanut butter and salted caramel) ice cream that needs eating...

My personal view is that winter is the best time to eat ice cream - it's less likely to melt whilst your taking photos! However for those of you who are not 100% serious about ice cream, and don't want to eat it in the street in December, Ginger's Comfort Emporium has moved indoors into the weird and wonderful Afflecks in Manchester city centre.

My regular readers may recognise this area was previously occupied by the Cocoa Emporium - do you have to be called an Emporium to be here?

A board displays some of the flavours - like Marmalade on Toast (yes we're still talking about ice cream), which was the winner in last year's British Street Food awards. It's made with marmalade and caramelised breadcrumbs and an orange blossom tea sorbet.

I asked Claire which was "the best" flavour, and I could tell she was appalled by the question! She told me "they're all my favourites".

In the end I went for the plum gin and juniper ice-cream:

The book is stylish, and written with passion.

The book would make a great Christmas present - if you can bear to be parted with it.

Bramhall - Ella's Gelato

I think we can officially say it's now summer! When I was a child ice-cream usually meant vanilla (which I doubt had ever seen a vanilla pod) or Neapolitan (a disgusting mixture of the vanilla with a strawberry ice-cream that didn't taste of real strawberries, and a poor chocolate ice-cream). When I first went abroad, as a teenager, I was amazed how good real ice-cream could be!

Happily you can now get some very good ice-cream in this country. Ella's make delicious Italian style ice-cream in Bramhall:

If you're not sure what you want, ask Amir for a sample. I can particularly recommend the Jaffa Cake (chocolate and orange) ice-cream:

Archers Jersey Ice-cream

I was recently staying at Walworth Castle, whilst exploring County Durham, and was delighted to find Archers Jersey Ice-cream was just up the road. The Archer farmer decided to go into ice-cream making over 10 years ago, after losing their cows to Foot and Mouth. They replaced their Holstein Freisians with some Jerseys (for extra creamy milk) and have never looked back.

Their ice-cream is made from local ingredients where possible, the rhubarb ice-cream is made with champagne rhubarb from their garden, strawberry ice-cream is made with strawberries from F W Elgey in Piercebridge (when in season) and the toffee and fudge ice-cream contains pieces of Loopy Lisa's fudge.

They're are continually coming up with new flavours, and my favourite is their passion fruit ice-cream.

John Archer used to farm in Kenya and passion fruits grew on the farm, so they decided to bring a bit of African sunshine back to the UK. Their passion fruit ice-cream has won an award at The National Ice Cream Competition ICA Show and tastes amazing.

They are one of the first people to produce ice-cream cakes, which look great and are hand decorated for any occasion.

There's a café and play area and also a a trail around the farm.

The ice-cream can also be bought elsewhere, in parlours in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northallerton, Richmond, Yarm and even now on the Wirral.

Henley Ice Cream

Henley in Arden (not to be confused with Henley on Thames) is a fine ancient manorial town, with some interesting historic buildings. You can buy Henley ice-cream from their 16th Century ice-cream parlour and tea room situated on the High Street, in the middle of Henley.

A board outside the shop:

shows the wide range of flavours available.

For special diets they also do a diabetic ice cream, gluten and lactose free ice cream and gluten free cones.

Henley ice-cream has been going since 1934. According to their web site, they used to have a member of staff directing traffic - as the volume of customers was causing the High Street to get blocked!
