Baked in Tettenhall
This morning I told my friends I was off to get a "Kick in the Walnuts"! No, it's not a euphemism, but a rather fine loaf made with walnut, cinnamon, raisins and pink peppercorns and made by a very talented brother and sister bakery in Tettenhall.
Tettenhall has already had a mention in this blog, when I went to Robinsons (a fine butcher and deli). It's a lovely village (it's got two greengrocers) and next door to one of these on the Upper Green is Baked:
I found out about them whilst watching Britain's Best Baker, and wasn't surprised when they won their heat, despite some serious competition. Remarkably they'd only been trading for 10 months, when they entered the competition.
They're passionate about their bread:
This Brummie Bacon Cake:
was still warm when I bought it and was consumed within minutes of leaving the shop! It's a scone mix, made with local bacon and cheese, and topped with pork scratchings!
They aim to get virtually everything locally, they make a bread using beer from Holdens Brewery, and they sell chutneys, jams and jellies from Wildside Preserves:
with ingredients like quince or medlars.
Anywhere that sells Has Bean coffee is worth a visit, and I enjoyed an espresso here.
If you've got a sweet tooth there's Apple Crumble Pies or these Frangipane Tarts:
Catherine and Richard have a good understanding of flavours and are talented and passionate about what they do. I can't recommend this place too highly! I'll finish with a picture of Catherine with their Parsnip and Cinnamon cake - which impressed the judges in Britain's Best Baker:
